Onionz @ Phonic Tonight (July 23, 2009)

ONIONZ

(((PHONIC))) very proudly presents Andrew Venegas, better known as DJ Onionz, Thursday, July 23rd along with Alland Byallo and Still Rob G.

Artistic expression has been a central focus in Onionz’s life almost since birth. His father, Victor Venegas, a latin jazz icon, played the upright bass alongside Mongo Santamaria, Tito Puente and Celia Cruz in the 1970’s and early 80’s. Before reaching age ten, Andrew was appearing onstage with his father’s band in front of thousands in New York City, a mere child playing percussion with amazing artists such as Dave Amram, Candido, Steve Berrios, Paquito DeRivera and childhood friend Adam Cruz.

Transitioning to electronic music, Onionz picked up his first turntables in 1982. His early gigs were characterized as legendary nights and early mornings at almost every NYC venue imaginable.  As a producer, he has released over 100 songs and remixes over the last 15 years, and tours the globe regularly, lighting up dance floors in over 30 countries (and counting).  His status on the decks is a lock while his deep understanding of sound and musically creating an emotion has awarded him international recognition in the world of electronic dance music.

Join Onionz at the legendary Endup Thursday, July 23rd for a journey of musical bliss.

MOZAIC at Phonic (July 16, 2009)

MOZAIC

MOZAIC is one of the most diverse DJ’s of the Bay Area! It is amazing how he combines so many unique sounds and yet never looses the groove . . . and is constantly keeping the dance floor guessing as to what he might throw down next. He is one of those “no-boundaries” and “no-rules” DJs that reminds you why dance music is FUN! We cant wait to hear him on the Endup’s sounds system this Thursday - and hopefully you are just as excited as we are!

MOZAIC’S BIO: DJ/vocalist/producer hailing from San Francisco. On any given weekend, if he’s not behind the decks (he played over 100 gigs during 2008), you’ll likely find him on the dancefloor, which is what makes the 10-year veteran a dancer’s DJ. Mozaic has built a reputation on solid mixing and fearless genre-hopping: tech-house, techno, broken beat, 2-step, midtempo and dub all find their way into his arsenal- sometimes within a single set. Recently, you also may have seen/heard Mozaic’s collaboration with EPROM, Hookerz & Blow; they’ve been laying waste to dancefloors up and down the West Coast with their live dj/laptop sets, and had recent remixes rinsed by everyone from Basement Jaxx to Jesse Rose to Annie Mac.

Justin Long in SF to celebrate (((PHONIC))) 3rd Anniversary

Justin Long

To celebrate (((PHONIC))) 3rd anniversary, we bring you Justin Long tonight (April 23, 2009) along with LadyHaus, JPhilp and Rob G.  Justin Long, one of Chicago’s house music pioneers, began DJing at the young age of 15.  His early musical influences ranged from Joy Division and Depeche Mode to the Sex Pistols.  In 1988, Justin discovered house music on WBMX radio, which directed him into the world of house music where he has helped shape the Chicago House sound into what it is today.

During the past 15 years, Justin has accomplished more than most could imagine in the house music industry.  In the early ’90s, Justin began DJing at underground events throughout the Midwest with the likes of Derrick Carter, Cajmere and Traxx.  In 1999, Justin was the founding DJ on Chicago’s Q101 Sonic Boom Radio, one of the longest running mix shows in the US and is now preparing to start .dotbleep radio on XM.

Through his performances, mixes and shows, Justin continues to push the boundaries of house music while constantly refining himself as an artist.

Will Saul in 1st time appearance in San Francisco!

Will Saul

Will Saul is the producer and DJ behind Simple Records and Aus Music. His sound is based in deep, driving house and techno with flashes of soul and irresistible melodies that hark back to the early days of Detroit. Over the last few years Will has gained an admirable reputation as not only a show-stealing DJ, but also a talented A&R and producer. He is resident at The End in London and has remixed for Chicken Lips, Jesse Rose, Manuel Tur, Chymera, Steve Lawler, Phonique and Marc Romboy to name just a few. Remixes for Solomun (Liebe*Detail), Appleblim and 2020 Soundsystem are also in the pipeline and will be released in early 2009. ‘Zippo’ by Will and Mike Monday has just been signed to Buzzin’ Fly and will be released in February. His latest production Teddys Back was instantly snapped by Parisian label Versatile (home to Joakim, Chateau Flight and I-Cube) and will be released as part of a multi artist series in early 2009 that also includes
Radioslave, Sound Stream, Mr.Ozio and Ripperton.

Will was born in Taunton, Somerset in 1978. Always surrounded by music, his musical path has developed gradually. Growing up his parents encouraged him to play the piano, sax and timpani, each of which he disliked at the time. He started buying records at eight - motown, soul, R&B, film scores - and diligently recorded the Top 40 on Sunday afternoons. Before his teens he’d begun collecting hip-hop and by sixteen was into dance. Trekking to clubs across England every weekend inspired him to get a job and save up enough cash for two turntables and a mixer. For such a passionate collector, DJing was a revelation. Two years later he won Muzik’s mixtape talent contest Bedroom Bedlam, having progressed his sound from lush, jazzy grooves and leftfield oddities to include deep, dubby breaks and broken-beats. After two years working in Sony International’s A&R department he left to set up a label with friends. They called it Simple, to reflect their open-minded intention to release good music, of whatever genre. It was while working at the legendary Koobla records, and then the fantastic Phonica, that he had his eyes fully opened to the wonderful world of house and techno. At the time the scene was being re-invigorated by producers such as Mathew Jonson, who Will quickly employed for his first remix.

Simple Records’ musical focus is deep, futuristic house, techno and disco. As well as his own tracks, including ‘Sequential Circus’, ‘Mbira’ and ‘Pause’, the constant evolution of the label now sees Ian Pooley, Mike Monday, Adam Marshall, Motorcitysoul, James Priestley & Dan Berkson and Will’s studio partner Tam Cooper joining the core roster. Over the course of 6 years and well over 50 single releases Will has commissioned remixes from Mathew Jonson, Jeff Samuel, Argy, Gui Boratto, Sebo K, Isolee, Konrad Black, Jimpster, John Tejada, Tobias, Recloose, Tiger Stripes, Martin Landsky, Dixon and many, many more of underground house and techno’s most influential producers.

Look out for Will’s other label of love - Aus Music, which explores the more organic side of house, techno, disco and dub. With artists such as Sideshow (Fink on Ninja Tune), My My (Playhouse), Sian and Lee Jones involved and remixes from Jesse Rose, Prins Thomas, Efdemin, Jerome Sydenham, Partial Arts, Roland Appel and Stefan Goldmann Aus looks set to be something very special.

Aus Music and Simple Records continue to go from strength to strength following autumn albums from Motorcitysoul (Simple) and Lee Jones (Aus). February will see the Sideshow album drop on Aus (featuring remixes from Chateau Flight, Sebo K, Appleblim and vocals from Paul St.Hilaire & Cortney Tidwell) followed by the double CD Aus Music . . . All Night Long in April. One CD will feature new tracks by Will (with a vocal from Paul St.Hilaire) and the core Aus roster along with exclusive tracks from MyMy, Roland Appel, Appleblim, Shur-I-Khan and remixes from I-Cube and Lawrence. The Second CD will be a DJ mix of the Aus back cat by Will. Look out for Will’s second full artist album in Sep 09.

Check out Will tomorrow night (April 9, 2009) at The Endup’s Phonic!
